So Long Frank Lloyd Wright

I had to get myself a laptop computer for Christmas. Why? It all started with a new travel contract. But first, a little back story. The last laptop I owned was a windows version. And that version was the not so great one that tried to make the laptop like a tablet. It seemed great in theory, but then it had all kinds of bugs and gremlins and glitches so it was really not a great idea after all. So I got rid of it. I figured I have an iPhone and an iPad, I dont even need a laptop or PC, right? Which brings me back to the reason I bought myself a laptop for Christmas this year.

For those of you who don’t know, I’m a travel nurse. I’m finishing up a contract in Georgia and will be heading to Florida next. One of the requirements for the new contract was to complete 15 hours worth of online education. When I tried to begin this education, I discovered most of it required adobe flash, the one system tool that doesn’t work on the iPhone or iPad. Meh. 😐 I didn’t lose heart though. I did a bit of googling and discovered an app that would allow me to use adobe flash. Hooray! 🥳 I plowed through half of the 15 hours before I hit the next wall. One course required I set up a web conference. In the instruction email I learned that said conference would not work on any device accept a windows or mac laptop or PC. Bummer! 😑

I resigned myself to investing in a laptop. But then I thought it would be silly to have a phone, a tablet, and a computer. So I decided to sell back the iPad and put that money toward a new mackbook air. And here we are, two weeks later, computer on my lap, writing this post.

All this to say, the year didn’t go the way I expected it to go. Last year at this time I thought I would live in Arizona for one more year. I’ve been in Georgia for half the year. I thought I would be planning for a thru hike of the Appalachian Trail. I changed my mind and started section hiking the trail instead. I thought I’d be content working for the company that staffs ambulatory surgery centers around Phoenix. I wasn’t, so I dove back into travel nursing. I thought that when my youngest came home from the Middle East, we’d pick up like he was never gone. He got engaged and now my family is getting a new member.

The year may not have ended the way I expected but, It has been a wonderful, adventurous year nevertheless. I think God really wanted me to have this laptop too. I think he wants me to start writing a bit again. Writing from the WordPress app never quite did it for me. But getting on here, on the laptop, feels so fluid. Another reason I think this was part of God’s plan – my Florida kids bought me a digital photo frame for Christmas – which only works with an SD card, a flash drive, or a computer. Ha! So yeah, God’s plan.

The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. Proverbs 16:9 ESV

Goodbye 2018. Thanks for the memories!

P.S. I finished those 15 hours of education a week ago. 😉

The Faith Of A Backpacker

When I dreamed about moving to Arizona 30 years ago, I never imagined how much I would love it here. Never could have dreamed how much better it was.

Soon after arriving, I rediscovered hiking. Fun hiking. Up and down over mountains hiking. Then I discovered backpacking. The first trip was an epic disaster, or at least it felt like it to my catastrophizing mind. I’m so thankful for the friend who told me not to give up on backpacking yet. She encouraged me to update my gear and try again. Boy am I glad I took her advice!

6 backpacking trips later, I am loving it more and more! Backpacking has increased my faith so much. Of the last 6 trips, I’ve gone out alone 5 times. Why? I like going out alone. I see the Lord work so clearly when I go out alone. He’s a good good Father. He answers my prayers specifically each time. For a water source. For a campsite. For animal sitings. For people to show up when I need a little help over an obstacle. His creation is magnificent and I do believe proclaims the glory of the Lord!

So yeah. Backpacking. Give it a try. You may just fall in love with the Lord even more. I know I have!

Happy Sunday! 😁
