My flock is very tiny. I have 2 little sheep to guide.
a person who herds, tends, and guards sheep.
a person who protects, guides, or watches over a person or group of people.
a member of the clergy.
the Shepherd, Jesus Christ.
—verb (used with object)
to tend or guard as a shepherd: to shepherd the flock.
to watch over carefully.
The Lord gave them to me as a gift many years ago. I didn’t see them as a gift until I understood who the Lord is to me.
In the last 2 years, He has shown me I am their shepherd. Despite all my best efforts to screw up their lives before I knew Jesus, we are a solid flock. God is good like that, allowing forgiveness and restoration of our little flock when it could have scattered forever.
Now that I understand my most important role, I’ve fully accepted the honor of the gift of shepherd.
My boys call me with good news, bad news, struggles, successes, failures. They call for advice, encouragement, guidance, love. They call to be heard. They call for prayer, even the one who doesn’t want to know God knows I’ll pray on his behalf and he is glad.
Sometimes I forget what an honorable call this is, given my boys are actually grown men now. But then the phone rings or the text message comes with news and I throw up a hallelujah to the ultimate Shepherd of us all.
It’s what I’m thinking about.
